FREE SKETCHUP MODEL – THREE-LAYER WALNUT BED
This is the free SketchUp model for my three-layer walnut bed—a large furniture project designed around one difficult idea:
Can a bed come apart without looking, sounding, or feeling like flat-pack furniture?
The bed was built primarily from walnut, with a recessed zebrano centre layer framed by thin purpleheart accents. The design combines long horizontal rails, large triangular legs, a removable upholstered headboard, hidden BMB bed connectors, steel centre supports, and replaceable mattress slats.
This project was not simply about building a heavy wooden frame.
It had to feel completely rigid while being used, remain comfortable enough to lean against every night, look properly designed rather than relying entirely on expensive timber—and still separate into manageable components whenever it needed to leave the room.
The layered rails create depth and shadow while reinforcing the long, low proportions of the bed. The triangular legs carry the weight directly instead of asking the removable hardware to do everything. The upholstered panels can be removed or recovered independently, and the hidden connectors allow the major parts to separate without repeatedly driving screws into the walnut.
The result is a bed designed to feel permanent when assembled—
and modular only when necessary.
This SketchUp file is intended as a starting point for your own version. You can follow the original dimensions, resize it for a different mattress, simplify the materials, change the accent woods, modify the headboard, or adapt the internal support system to suit the hardware and materials available to you.
You do not need walnut, zebrano, or purpleheart to use the design. The same proportions and construction principles can be adapted to oak, ash, cherry, beech, or other suitable furniture woods.

What’s inside the model
- Complete bed-frame layout
- Three-layer side-rail construction
- Recessed accent-strip arrangement
- Triangular leg design
- Headboard frame and upholstered-panel layout
- Rail-to-leg connection locations
Tools required — typical
Table saw, mitre saw or circular saw, router, chisels, drill, clamps, sander, and accurate measuring tools.
A planer and jointer are strongly recommended when working from rough lumber. A bandsaw is useful for shaping the legs, and welding equipment will be required if you reproduce the steel centre-support system exactly.
Alternative support systems can be used if metalworking equipment is not available.
Skill level and time
Intermediate to advanced · Large multi-day furniture project
The design involves large components, accurate joinery, removable hardware, upholstery, and careful planning during assembly. Because of the bed’s size and weight, an additional person may be useful during final assembly.
