SKETCHUP MODEL – FOLDING WALNUT DESK

This is the SketchUp model for my folding walnut desk—a small furniture project built around a rather unusual problem:

How do you build a proper desk for a first-grader when it needs to disappear after homework?

My son had just started first grade, and somehow, despite having a father with a workshop full of woodworking tools, he was doing his homework on an ironing board.

He spends most afternoons at his grandmother’s house, where space is limited. And since my mother is over 70 years old, I didn’t want to give her a heavy piece of furniture that she’d have to struggle to move around.

A regular desk wasn’t going to work.

I considered putting it on wheels, but carpets, stability, and the relatively narrow design made that solution less appealing.

So I went in a different direction.

The legs fold inward, the tabletop is removable, and the entire desk can be stored against a wall when it’s not needed.

But I wanted to take the idea a little further.

Instead of having to store the tabletop separately, I designed the frame so the tabletop slides inside it when everything is folded.

That way, the whole desk becomes one compact piece that’s much easier to put away.

And although practicality was important, I didn’t want something that looked like a camping table.

I wanted a proper piece of furniture.

The desk is built primarily from European walnut, with purpleheart accents that add a little contrast without overpowering the design. The frame uses relatively small components to keep the weight down, while loose-tenon joinery provides strength without making everything unnecessarily bulky.

The result is a desk that looks like furniture when it’s open—

and takes up surprisingly little space when it’s not.

This SketchUp file is intended as a starting point for your own version. You can follow the original design, adjust the dimensions, change the materials, modify the folding mechanism, or adapt the construction to the tools and hardware available to you.

You don’t need walnut or purpleheart to build it. Oak, ash, cherry, beech, or other suitable furniture woods can work just as well.

Tools required — typical

Table saw, mitre saw or circular saw, drill, clamps, sander, and accurate measuring tools.

A planer and jointer are recommended when working with rough lumber.

I used a Festool Domino for the loose-tenon joinery, but alternative joinery methods can be used if you don’t have one.

Depending on how you adapt the design, a router and additional tools may also be useful.

Skill level and time

Intermediate · Small multi-day furniture project

Although this is a relatively small piece of furniture, the folding design requires careful attention to dimensions, clearances, alignment, and assembly.

The most important part is making sure the legs can fold properly and that the tabletop fits inside the frame when everything is stored.

Accurate measurements and a little patience will make the build much easier.
